Either would be good. Letting him take them could make for some fun intimate time together. However, I personally would get your friend to do it since she is a professional. She will be able to get better shots and likely knows how to get the most flattering ones of you. Plus, she is your friend so you will feel comfortable with her taking them as opposed to a random professional photographer. So you have the opportunity to get a professional looking photo without feeling uncomfortable.
Be sure to sign it and frame it so he can put it on his desk at work.
It would be more of a surprise if you have a professional take them. He would be pleasantly surprised, and probably pretty hot for you then too.
get a friend. dont be embarassed with a photographer
get the friend to do it! In my experience he won't stay behind the camera long!!! ^_^
If it's a present for him, it doesn't make any sense to have him be the photographer since that defeats the purpose. Go with a professional photographer.
