My husband was just diagnosed with CML. He will be taking Gleevec, I've been to every website I can find trying to get my hands on any and all information...What are the risks? Conceiving a child when my husband was DX with Chronic Meyloid Leukemia?
Imatinib (Gleevec) is a member of a new class of agents that act by inhibiting tyrosine kinase enzymes instead of non-specifically killing rapidly dividing cells. It is quite different from previous chemotherapy agents. I would not anticipate a problem for you if you were to conceive, but this is an agent new to medicine since I retired as a cancer specialist.
The physicians who are prescribing Gleevec for your husband's Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia should be explaining possible consequences for you and your husband. Explanations are part of our job as medical oncologists. Be sure to ask at the time of your next appointment.
Best of luck. Things are much better for CML patients than they were when I was in practice.Conceiving a child when my husband was DX with Chronic Meyloid Leukemia?
